On January 15, 1942, the Indian National Army (INA), led by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, was established. This event marked the beginning of Indian Army Day. This historic event signaled the beginning of an ordered and unified force of Indian troops fighting to free their country from British domination.



The Importance of January 15:

There is a great deal of historical significance to the decision to declare January 15 as Indian Army Day. On this day in 1949, General Sir Francis Butcher, the final British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, was succeeded by Lieutenant General K.M. Cariappa, the first Indian to hold that position. With this historic transfer, a new era marked by the leadership of the Indian Army by native sons of the land began.
